What began as a group of teachers providing story hours and speakers in 1992 has evolved into greater things! Incorporated June 1, 1995, EMOTIONS has surpassed many organizations in the county in student initiatives, providing recreational, educational, academic, cultural, and technical opportunities.

Impact over the Years

June 1, 1995: First Annual Stand for Children Day

It was a Sunday in Warsaw like never before.
Motivated by the National Stand for Children Day and March on Washington organized by Marian Wright Edelman, it was very successful. EMOTIONS held the first grassroots organizing for children in Duplin County. Over 50 agencies, organizations, and businesses came together that Sunday afternoon in 1997to celebrate the children. “The Proclamation was read, the affirmation was said, and every since then, by the hearts of our youth are we led.”

1996 - 2001: Harambee Child Development Academy

Emotions gained access to a vacant day care building and ran a vital daycare center that operated until all the first attendees had entered into kindergarten. Now, high school seniors and college graduates, EMOTIONS desires to be vital in their peers lives by giving economic opportunity to those that were not college ready.

2002-2006: Reading is Fundamental and Lunch & Learn in Wayne and Duplin Co.

2005-2008: Community Connections Youth Center in Faison

Emotions Organization operated Community Connections Youth Center from 2005 until 2008, in Faison, serving youth from Duplin, Sampson, and Wayne counties providing afterschool care program and a program to help drop outs return to high school or to get their GED. Students were recruited and Emotions helped them and others gain GED’s and enter college.

2008-2010: EMOTIONS partners with community organizations for programming and events

October 2008 – With sponsorship from The NC Justice Center, EMOTIONS held the first Education and Law Institute with over 25 graduates including former Commissioner Chiokee Kenyatta and Wife, Linda Thompson

June 1, 2009 – When the Board of Education and the County Commissioner were debating over school funds, Emotions Organization had trainers and speakers from all over North Carolina at the annual resource fair held at James Sprunt Community College.

In 2010, Emotions Organization held a Family Involvement Summit at James Sprunt Community College in which participants gave Vision Boards of what they wanted to see happen in the county. Emotions also worked with Duplin County Schools to increase literacy by providing books and incentives for youth.

2011-2015: EMOTIONS partners with community organizations for programming and events (cont.)

In 2011, Community Connections Youth Center and Computer Lab was opened in Warsaw to help with dropout prevention through the READ to Succeed Project. The Stand for Children Day was held at WMS with over 200 attendees and several speakers.

A successful event was our Annual Christmas Youth Retreat. In the past, EMOTIONS sponsored everything, but in 2011, Cornerstone CDC, Joyful Noise, Community Connections, Tough CDC, and several businesses partnered to help families in these tough economic times by providing gifts to over 200 participants through Gifts for Kids.

In 2015, due to lack of transportation and students being located in remote areas, Emotions partnered with 5 businesses for Community Connections Youth Center Sites with Computer labs, in Magnolia, Turkey, Wallace, Kenansville, and Goldsboro in 2015.
